Lexington focused on the improvement of teaching and the learning environment to recapture the ideal of thinking theologically. First of all, the faculty met to review the kind of thinking and integration expected in the Senior Symposium project—a summative paper in which students are expected to express serious theological reflection. Then the faculty gathered in a retreat to consider the latest Senior Symposium class and, with the help of Deborah Core, author of The Seminary Student Writes, to evaluate student reading and writing. In another retreat, the faculty met with Victor Klimoski to consider student learning styles and begin a curriculum review framed especially by the faculty’s engagement with the issue of student theological reflection. Faculty found this process of inquiry to be “invigorating, positive, and exciting.”
