United’s project was designed to engage faculty in the assessment and development of benchmarks by which faculty can assess students’ understanding of, and ability to do, integration. The first part of the project was to identify and develop educational approaches to foster students’ ability to integrate. The second part was to train and support faculty in these approaches. Activities included working with a consultant to develop a variety of appropriate teaching/learning approaches and planning a faculty retreat to finalize the statement of the benchmarks. The project’s focus expanded to include a broader consideration of basic curricular assumptions and practices that emerged as central concerns for the faculty.
